Climate Change & Energy Transition: Pain or Gain? A Roundtable Discussion at FUPRE
The transition to a more sustainable energy future is essential for mitigating the impacts of climate change, yet this transition also presents unique challenges. To explore this complex issue, Nurses Across the Borders (NABHI) participated in the Third Roundtable Discussion on Climate Change and Energy Transition, hosted by the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Centre for Sustainable Development (FUPRE) in Effurun, Warri, Delta State, Nigeria.
The event, themed “Climate Change and Energy Transition: Pain or Gain?“, brought together stakeholders from various sectors, including academia, government, industry, and civil society organizations, to engage in a vital dialogue. Key topics discussed included:
-
The Urgent Need for Energy Transition: The roundtable highlighted the scientific consensus on climate change and the need to rapidly shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources to mitigate global warming and its devastating consequences.
-
Economic and Social Implications: The transition to a sustainable energy system requires careful planning to ensure it is just and equitable, considering the potential economic and social impacts on workers in traditional energy sectors and vulnerable communities.
-
Policy and Governance: Effective policies, regulations, and investments are crucial to drive the energy transition and create an enabling environment for the development and deployment of clean energy technologies.
-
Technological Innovation: Advances in renewable energy technologies, energy storage, and smart grid systems are essential to create a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy future.
-
Public Health Considerations: NABHI contributed to the discussion by emphasizing the health impacts of both climate change and the energy transition. Moving away from fossil fuels has the potential to improve air quality, reduce respiratory diseases, and create healthier environments, while unmanaged transition processes may bring about new challenges and exacerbate existing inequalities in health.
The roundtable provided a valuable platform for open discussion and knowledge sharing, underscoring the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration in tackling the complex challenges of climate change and energy transition.
